Two kinds of eSIM
An eSIM is just a SIM card turned into a profile stored on your phone. What matters is what the profile contains:
- Number SIM: the carrier gives you a real mobile number. You can make calls, receive texts and use data. Verification codes from exchanges, banks and Google accounts rely on this.
- Data-only eSIM: travel eSIMs such as Airalo, Nomad and Ubigi mostly give you data only. Your phone settings sometimes show a number, but it is usually a placeholder. Nomad says so itself: it cannot receive verification codes.
A third kind sits in between: numbers bundled with travel eSIMs, such as the US or UK number in a Holafly monthly subscription, or the subscription numbers from Saily and Roamless. Most of them receive texts in an app or by email. Platforms check the number type before sending a code, and they often treat these as internet phone numbers and refuse to send. For any account that holds money, use a carrier number SIM.
You probably need three SIMs
If you live in the UK and use exchanges often, a common set-up is:
| Role | Suggestion | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Main number | UK local number SIM | Stable for the long term, linked to every important account |
| Backup number | An overseas number that is cheap to keep active | A US or Hong Kong number, used to recover accounts if the main number fails |
| Data abroad | Travel data eSIM | Buy per trip, delete when done |
One phone can run two lines at once. Apple’s guide says both numbers can send and receive texts, and only one line uses data at a time. When you travel:
- Keep your main number SIM on and turn off its data roaming. Use it only for texts and calls.
- Set the travel eSIM as your mobile data line.
- When you get back, turn off or delete the travel eSIM and let the main number handle data again.
UK: your main number
giffgaff has the lowest bar to entry and runs on the O2 network. You only need an email address and a payment card. No ID.
- Download the giffgaff app and sign up. New users cannot get an eSIM with credit alone. You have to buy a monthly plan (a goodybag) first, from £6/month.
- Activate the eSIM in the app. giffgaff eSIMs can only be installed in the app. There is no QR code.
- Keeping the number active: you need at least one paid activity every 6 months, such as a call, a text, using data or buying a plan. Calls to customer service and free numbers do not count.
- Abroad: according to the official roaming rates, receiving texts in the rest of the world is free and sending costs 30p a text. Wi-Fi Calling does not work outside the UK.
One caution: since late July 2026, third-party articles have reported that some giffgaff users who spend long periods outside the UK received disconnection emails. giffgaff has not published a general policy, and we have not verified how many users are affected.
Other carriers:
- Three pay as you go: one paid activity every 180 days. Once the number is deactivated it cannot be restored. Receiving texts abroad is free. Pay-as-you-go eSIM from £10/month.
- O2 pay as you go: the eSIM is free. You need one top-up or paid activity in any 6-month period, or the line is cut off. If you reactivate, you get a new number.
- SMARTY: since January 2026 new users can sign up directly on eSIM, from £6/month.
- EE pay as you go still does not support eSIM. For an eSIM you need a monthly contract, which involves a credit check.
US number: cheap to keep
If you are not in the US but want to keep a +1 number for verification codes, these three are the usual picks:
| Carrier | Lowest keep-alive cost | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra Mobile PayGo | $3/30 days | If your balance runs short the line is suspended first; if you do not pay within 60 days the number is permanently cancelled |
| Tello | $5/month; parked number $3/30 days | The eSIM must be activated while you are in the US; a parked number cannot send or receive texts |
| Red Pocket | Annual plans from about $30 | Renew within about 30 days of expiry; once you are abroad you cannot turn on roaming |
Outside the US, you mostly receive texts over Wi-Fi Calling. Turning it on asks for a US emergency address (E911). US Mobile states that a line must first be used inside the US before international roaming can be turned on, and lines activated outside the US cannot roam.
Google Voice is an internet phone number. Many banks, payment apps and social platforms refuse to send codes to it, so it is not a good backup number.
Hong Kong +852: prepaid SIMs
Hong Kong prepaid SIMs need ID registration. Non-residents can register with a passport, up to 10 SIMs per person per carrier. Keeping the number active means topping up regularly to extend the validity:
| SIM | Lowest keep-alive cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 3HK International Supreme Card | HK$50 extends 365 days | 3HK website |
| SmarTone prepaid SIM | A single HK$50 top-up resets validity to 365 days | SmarTone website |
| China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) | HK$50 online top-up extends 180 days | CMHK website |
| Club Sim | From about HK$15/year | The old HK$6 keep-alive pack has been withdrawn (blog) |
Changes in 2026: CMHK prepaid SIMs from 17 June and China Unicom Hong Kong (CUniq) from 1 August can no longer be activated for the first time in mainland China. You have to activate them in Hong Kong. SIMs already activated are not affected. Most carriers’ official pages do not say whether receiving texts while roaming abroad is charged, so the table marks these as “not verified”.
Mainland China: in person only
Mobile eSIMs from the three main carriers have been in commercial trials since October 2025. The rules are much the same:
- You must go in person with your ID and an eSIM-capable phone sold in mainland China to one of the carrier’s own stores for verification. Partner stores will not process it.
- China Unicom started a trial in October 2026: a lottery for online sign-up. If you are drawn, you apply in the app, and it is still checked by staff. China Mobile and China Telecom still require a store visit.
- You cannot sign up from abroad. Moving a physical SIM to eSIM also has to be done in China.
- Sources contradict each other on whether foreign, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan IDs are accepted. Call customer service to confirm first.
- China Broadnet (192 numbers) has not opened mobile eSIM yet.
The usual way to keep the number active is to switch to the 8-yuan plan, a low-cost tier at CNY 8/month. Confirm with the carrier before you rely on it. Before you go abroad, turn on international roaming. The China Mobile website says receiving texts abroad is free. If you only need verification codes, turn off data roaming so you are not charged for data by mistake.
Japan, Singapore and the rest of Asia
- Japan: povo 2.0 has a basic monthly fee of 0 yen. Buy one paid add-on within 180 days to keep the number, and receiving texts abroad is free. You need Japanese ID and a valid residence card, so tourists cannot sign up. Since April 2026, online ID registration reads the IC chip in your ID. Tourists who want a real Japanese number can look at Mobal: the Voice-Only plan is ¥1,430/month, and receiving texts abroad needs roaming turned on separately.
- Singapore: prepaid SIMs registered with only a passport end after 30 days and cannot be renewed. Keeping a number long term needs Singapore ID.
- South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines: tourist SIMs all expire. In South Korea, a number opened with only a passport is cancelled after you leave. Malaysian tourist SIMs last up to 3 months. Since May 2026 Thailand limits foreigners to 3 SIMs per carrier. In the Philippines, SIMs registered on a tourist visa are deactivated after 30 days.
- Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UAE: all need a passport check in store or by video. Validity follows your visa or a fixed number of days, so you cannot keep these numbers long term. Turkey also lets unregistered foreign phones work for only 120 days.
Europe: cheap, but stricter ID rules
- Germany, ALDI TALK: the law requires ID verification first. You can verify with a passport by video in the app. The eSIM starter pack costs €9.99, and a €5 top-up extends it by 4 months, which makes it very cheap to keep. The arrangement that bills the UK as part of the EU zone ends on 2026-12-31, and charges for use in the UK from 2027 have not been announced.
- France, Free Mobile: €2/month, no contract. According to the 2026 tariff guide, this plan is only for people who live in metropolitan France or can prove a stable link with France. The UK is in the plan’s Europe zone, and receiving texts is free. If you live abroad long term and barely use it in France, you will trigger the fair-use clause.
- Italy, Iliad: from €4.99/month. Most sources say you need an Italian tax code (codice fiscale). From 1 January 2026 the UK no longer counts as free roaming, but the official tariff sheet says receiving texts is not charged.
- Spain, Lebara: online verification with a passport, but the eSIM can only be activated inside Spain.
- Switzerland, Sunrise prepaid: upload your passport and record a short selfie video to verify. Sunrise says the eSIM can be registered to an address abroad. The starter pack costs CHF 19.90, and the number is only deleted after 17 months without use, so it suits a number you leave in a drawer.
If you live in the UK and use an EU number, keep two things in mind. The UK is outside the legal scope of the EU’s Roam Like At Home rules, so each carrier sets its own rules on whether UK use is free. The EU rules also have a fair-use clause: if you live abroad long term and barely use the number at home, you may be charged extra.
Data abroad: travel eSIMs
Travel eSIMs are sold by destination and number of days. No ID, just an email address and a payment card. A few examples (prices change, check the official site):
| Service | Example price | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | UK unlimited £21/7 days | Mostly data only |
| Holafly | Japan unlimited $27.50/7 days | No number on single-country plans; the monthly subscription includes a US, UK or Canadian number that receives texts only in the app |
| Ubigi | Mainland China 1GB/7 days $4 | Data only |
| GigSky | US 1GB/7 days $2.99 | Data only |
| Saily | US 1GB/7 days $3.99 | US number available since June 2026, about $0.99/month |
| Roamless | Pay as you go, US and Europe from $2.45/GB | Numbers available since 2026, $6.95/month |
Check three things before you buy: whether hotspot is allowed, how much data you get before speeds drop, and whether the eSIM can be reinstalled (many can only be installed once and are gone if you delete them). Some plans for mainland China route traffic through Hong Kong, so Google and similar services work directly. Read the product description before you buy.
Keep-alive calendar
Put the latest date for each SIM’s keep-alive action in your phone calendar, with a reminder a week before. These are the minimum requirements for the SIMs in this guide:
| SIM | How often | Minimum action |
|---|---|---|
| giffgaff | 6 months | Any paid activity, such as one text |
| Three pay as you go | 180 days | A top-up or one paid use |
| Ultra PayGo | 30 days | $3 taken from your wallet automatically |
| 3HK International Supreme | 365 days | Top up HK$50 |
| ALDI TALK | Extended by balance | €5 top-up extends 4 months |
| Sunrise prepaid (Switzerland) | 17 months | Use it once |
| povo 2.0 | 180 days | Buy one paid add-on, from ¥250 |
Once a number is reclaimed, it can be given to someone else, and they will receive your accounts’ verification codes. Top up one time too many rather than let your main number lapse.
Using your number for exchange verification
- Where a platform supports an authenticator app or a passkey, switch to that and keep the phone number as a backup. Losing the number, changing SIMs or a SIM-swap scam then does far less damage.
- Use carrier number SIMs for both your main and backup numbers. Do not link subscription numbers, numbers that expire with a plan, or internet phone numbers to accounts that hold money.
- In July 2026 Ofcom in the UK issued two new rules. Prepaid SIMs (including eSIMs) will have a cap on texting many different numbers from 2027-01-18. It limits sending only and does not affect receiving codes. Calls from abroad that show a UK mobile number will appear as withheld unless verified from 2027-07-15.
Full comparison table
You can filter the table by region, type, ID requirement, sign-up method, whether you can sign up from abroad and whether it receives verification texts. You can also search it. Click a row to see ID details, text details, caveats and source links. ID levels: None = email only; Low = name and email, no ID; Medium = ID registration or a local address; High = local bank card, credit check, residence card or facial ID check.

eSIM can only be activated in the giffgaff app; no QR code or SM-DP+ is provided. New customers can't get an eSIM by just adding credit and must buy a plan first (My Mobiles, checked 2026-09-23). Important change: from around 2026-07-27 several long-term overseas users received ‘We're disconnecting your service’ emails citing long-term or permanent use outside the UK (source is a third-party article; giffgaff hasn't published a uniform policy; scope unverified). Some also say you must be in the UK to request a PAC (unverified). Reports differ on whether an overseas address can be used to register; all are third-party or user accounts.

Terms (as quoted on the ISPreview forum, version effective 2025-08-20): after 90 days with no chargeable activity (calls/texts/data) the balance is cleared and the SIM temporarily deactivated; topping up or buying a bundle within the following 365 days restores it, after which service is disconnected and the SIM can't be used again. A Lebara community manager confirmed on 2026-09-16: ‘temporarily deactivated after 90 days of non-use, can be reactivated within a further 365 days, then permanently deactivated’. Some users received reminder emails saying the SIM expires after 215 days of inactivity, while customer service says 90 days; accounts differ
Order online; a comparison table from Roami (a travel eSIM seller; published 2026-09, updated 2026-10) says Lebara online purchases need no ID or UK address, but the same article warns that non-UK billing addresses or foreign cards are often rejected by UK fraud checks; Lebara's official terms not checked directly
Holafly (data as of 2026-10-15) lists Lebara pay-per-use roaming rates: receiving texts free, sending 49p per text, answering calls 49p/min; applies outside Roam Like Home destinations (e.g. US, Hong Kong) when no roaming bundle has been bought (third party; the official lebara.co.uk page returned 403 and couldn't be opened). PAYG 30 days: 1GB £6, 4GB £8, 6GB £10, 20GB £15, unlimited data £20 (all with unlimited calls and texts; Holafly data as of 2026-10-15); the official PAYG page says eSIM available, no credit check
iD staff reply on the community forum: after about 4 months (120 days) without chargeable activity (calls/texts/data) the number may be disconnected; disconnected numbers go into a quarantine period before being reclaimed (not official terms)
No credit check for PAYG online; pay-monthly contracts need a credit check with 3 years of UK address history; checkout requires a UK mobile number (community post)
iD staff community reply (2026-10-20): outside Inclusive Roaming (50 free roaming destinations), receiving texts with roaming on may be charged, and setting a £0 spend cap is advised; in 2025-08 staff said receiving texts in China is charged at the same rate as sending. The US is not among the 50 free destinations (it falls under the paid Roam Beyond add-on, community post). An earlier staff reply said receiving texts is free worldwide, which contradicts the newer statement. Wi-Fi Calling supported (kenstechtips 2022, older source)

PAYG Plus rolling 30 days from £10/month (8GB; kenstechtips 2025-09, older source)
Official: a PAYG number must be used at least once every 180 days; a reminder text is sent after 90 days of inactivity, and if there's still no activity at 180 days the number is disconnected, can't be restored, and a new SIM is needed
PAYG Plus online orders need a payment card for auto-renewal; pay-monthly contracts need a credit check (not verified separately)
Official PAYG roaming page (Rest of the World): sending texts in Zones 1–4 costs £0.08/£0.30/£0.60/£0.60 each, answering calls £0.36/£0.72/£1.56/£1.80 per minute; the page lists no charge for receiving texts (it doesn't say which zone the US and Hong Kong are in). The price guide of VOXI, also part of Vodafone, likewise charges only for answering and sending. A 2015 Vodafone press release said receiving calls and texts while roaming is free (older source); a community reply says texts from ordinary numbers are free to receive, but it's unclear whether bank OTPs and similar count as premium texts. A third-party guide says most PAYG customers can't use the service abroad without buying a roaming Extra. Vodafone community moderator: Wi-Fi Calling isn't supported abroad (it switches off when connected to a non-UK network)

PAYG physical SIM from £10/month (2026 revamp, no eSIM); eSIM requires a pay-monthly contract, price unverified
Official help: after 60 days without chargeable activity a confirmation text is sent; once in hibernation, you can call within 90 days to restore the number and balance; after 273 days with no response the number is reclaimed and the balance cleared (a customer service post says hibernation starts at 179 days)
eSIM is only available on pay-monthly and SIM-only contracts, which require a UK credit check; PAYG is physical SIM by post only
Several EE Community Stars (volunteers, not official) say receiving ordinary texts is free worldwide (premium texts excepted), but the phone must be set up for roaming: pay-monthly customers must first text ROAMING to 150, and PAYG is enabled automatically after use in the UK. A third-party article says PAYG texts sent outside Europe cost 60p each and receiving is free. EE's official help page (Texting while abroad) doesn't say whether receiving texts is charged. Official news: each pass includes unlimited calls and texts within the US, Mexico and Canada. Roami says it must be bought and activated after landing in the US, while WhistleOut says it can be bought before departure; these conflict. The product page small print (search snippet) says it isn't suitable for long-term use outside the US. Minimum $275/year (annual) or $25/month. Terms (2026-08-27): after suspension for non-payment there's a 60-day hold, and if not paid within 60 days the account is cancelled and the number reassigned; porting the number out counts as cancelling that line. The terms allow service to be limited, suspended or terminated if you mainly use data on other networks outside Visible's coverage

ALDI TALKGermany · Number SIM€9.99 starter€5 adds 4 moGets codesID neededRemote, with limits
eSIM starter pack €9.99 (includes €10 credit); the Basistarif with no monthly fee has been available only to existing customers since 2026-03-02; new customers activating Tarif L online pay €10 for the first 4 weeks, then €19.99 / 4 weeks (Home & Go S €19.99 / 4 weeks)
Initially valid for 12 months after activation, extended by top-ups: €5 adds 4 months; several €15 top-ups or a single €30 top-up give up to 24 months; after expiry there are about 2 months in which you can only receive calls and SMS, then the line is deactivated. To take the number with you, you must formally cancel
German law (§172 TKG) requires identity verification before any SIM/eSIM is activated; a passport can be used (foreign passports depend on the verification provider, and some may be rejected); on a phone, verify by video in the app (24 hours) or at one of about 10,000 partner stores via Shop-Ident; residence registration is not required, a temporary German contact address (a hotel is fine) is enough
Third-party sources say the UK is currently charged as part of the EU zone (no extra roaming fees), but only until 2026-12-31; from 2027-01-01 the UK moves to ‘country group 2’ (the same group as Switzerland), with charges yet to be announced. Sending SMS abroad on the Basistarif costs 13 ct per message (7 ct in some countries). Whether receiving SMS while roaming is charged: Unverified. Wi-Fi Calling: Unverified

Keeping a German number and receiving codes within the EU; for long-term UK residents, it may get more expensive from 2027
Key changes: (1) the Basistarif stopped being sold to new customers from 2026-03; (2) EU-rate charging in the UK ends at the end of 2026 (a rule across the o2 family; teltarif 2026-08 also says o2 only until 2026-12-31, possibly extended but not guaranteed). The EU Roam Like At Home fair-use rule is roughly: over a 4-month observation period, if both time and data use abroad exceed domestic use, a surcharge may apply; the UK is outside the EU's legal scope anyway, so including it is voluntary on the carrier's part.

Official tariff brochure (2026-03-31 edition): the 2€ plan is ‘only for users living in metropolitan France or who can prove a stable link with metropolitan France’. Universfreebox (2021, older source) says an eSIM can be opened online from abroad, but you need a bank card, a RIB (bank account details) and an address in metropolitan France; it does not say whether the RIB must be for a French account. Another third party says ID and recent proof of address are required
Official tariff brochure (from 2026-03-31): the UK (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales) is listed in the 2€ plan's ‘Europe’ zone, and SMS from the Europe zone to France/Europe/DOM is unlimited; the brochure states ‘Les SMS reçus ne sont pas facturés’ (received SMS are not charged). Outside Europe (e.g. the US, Hong Kong) you must first enable Option Voyage in the customer area (requires a €10 credit prepayment by bank card). Fair use: if over 4 consecutive months your use and time in the Europe zone exceed those in metropolitan France, or the SIM is inactive in France for a long time and used mainly abroad, surcharges per the tariff sheet may apply after 15 days' notice. Sources disagree on whether it can be bought fully online before arrival: e&'s official site says you must take your passport to a store or partner outlet, and a 2026-10 guide says neither carrier supports buying a tourist eSIM purely online before arrival. Sources also conflict on whether du offers a free tourist eSIM; the du official site is authoritative.

Short trips to Saudi Arabia; not suitable for keeping a number long-term
In 2025 the Saudi regulator CST introduced remote eSIM for Hajj pilgrims, activated after biometric verification in the Absher app; that was a Hajj-season arrangement, and whether ordinary tourists can use it in 2026: Unverified. Simology 2026 says fully remote activation for tourists is inconsistent across carriers and often needs a partial store visit or video verification. Local number for short trips in Turkey
[IMEI 120 days] A phone brought in from abroad can be used with a Turkish SIM or roaming for at most 120 days without registration; after that it is blocked by all three networks. Registration requires a residence permit and a passport entry stamp, and only 1 device can be registered every 3 years. The 2026 fee varies by source: 54,258 TL (hemenhesap) or 57,241 TL (turkeytravelplanner, from 2026-01-01). Also, since July 2025 foreign eSIM sellers' websites cannot be opened inside Turkey, so buy and install before you leave; a foreign SIM used only for data on more than 90 of the 120 days is treated as permanent roaming and cut off within 30 days.

AiraloGlobal / multi-country · Data onlyFrom £9/3 daysData only, nothing to keepSome codesNo IDRemote sign-up
UK unlimited £21 / 7 days (from £9 / 3 days); Japan unlimited £20.50 / 7 days; mainland China unlimited £21 / 7 days (all the unlimited tiers shown by default on the pound-priced airalo.com pages; per-GB plans also available); global Discover 1GB / 7 days about $9; Discover+ (with number) 5GB + 50 minutes + 50 SMS / 30 days $42 (third-party, 2026-05 data)
Data only, so there is no number to keep; the Discover+ number lasts as long as the plan; whether it is kept after the plan expires: Unverified
Sign-up needs only an email address and payment; but in a few countries eSIMs require eKYC under local regulations (uploading a passport or other ID, possibly an address too): the buy button changes to ‘Verify identity’ and checks are done by third parties such as Jumio; completing it a few days to a week before travel is advised; which plans need eKYC must be checked one by one under ‘Additional information’ for each plan in the app, and no full official list of countries is published
Most plans are Data Only and cannot send or receive SMS. Only plans marked ‘Data, Voice & Text’ include calls and SMS; local voice plans cover domestic communication only and do not support international calls or SMS. Global Discover+ comes with a US +1 number (official help page); a third party says it ‘can receive bank SMS’, but Airalo does not promise it can receive every bank/exchange verification code; call forwarding and voicemail are not supported (esims.io). A data-only eSIM can sit alongside your original SIM (physical or another eSIM) in dual-SIM mode: turn off data roaming on the original line and keep it switched on to keep receiving SMS on your original number

One of the top choices for short-trip data; widest coverage and transparent single-country prices; Discover+ if you need a temporary US number
Coverage: global / multi-country (200+ countries and regions; single-country, regional and global Discover plans). Mainland China: the official Chinese help page says the China, Asia regional and global eSIMs all exit via ‘secure gateways outside mainland China’, so Google and WhatsApp work without a VPN (except on hotel Wi-Fi); a third party says traffic actually roams via CMHK in Hong Kong, and some reviews still advise having a VPN ready. Refunds: if not installed, request one under ‘Plan history’; for ‘wrong purchase / change of plans’ only Airmoney (in-app credit) is refunded, while for ‘installation failed / cannot use’ you can choose a refund to the original payment method (7–10 working days); installed mistaken purchases are not refunded, nor are expired or used-up plans. An eSIM can usually be installed only once, so contact support before deleting it. Prices shown on the website vary by region/currency; the app is authoritative

US 1GB / 7 days $4.50; UK 1GB / 7 days $5; Europe regional 1GB / 7 days $5 (€5); global 1GB / 7 days $10 (Freaking Nomads review, 2026-07)
The free number is valid for as long as the data pack; packs longer than 30 days come with only 30 days of number; after that it must be renewed as a paid subscription in Hushed (price unverified)
An email address and payment are enough (no ID requirement seen)
Most prepaid data packs come with a free US or Canadian number in the sister app Hushed (a UK number needs a paid Hushed upgrade), with $3 of call/SMS credit (about 90 minutes or 150 SMS; incoming calls and received SMS are also charged). Hushed is an in-app number, and platforms that look up number type will very likely flag it as non-fixed VoIP (inference; no specific platform tests seen), so it is not recommended for exchange/bank verification

Phones that do not support eSIM (older models or some Android phones) where you still want to use a travel eSIM or an eSIM-only mobile plan
Coverage: global / multi-country (a hardware solution, not a carrier). Key points: it cannot ‘convert’ your current carrier's physical SIM into an eSIM; instead, you insert a special physical card into the SIM slot and use the app to download up to 15 eSIM profiles onto it and switch between them at any time; the card, with its profiles, can be moved to another phone that has a SIM slot. The official site only covers Android compatibility (checked in the app) and does not mention iPhone, so treat iOS as unsupported. Version 1 cards have known issues on Android 13+ / Samsung One UI 6.1; version 2 cards sold after 2025-03-01 do not. It takes up a physical SIM slot, so on a single-slot phone the original physical SIM has to come out (inference). If the phone itself supports ‘Convert to eSIM’, that is a carrier feature and needs separate carrier support. Price sources are older; check the official site

from Nord Security, parent company of NordVPN
US 1GB / 7 days US$3.99; global 1GB / 7 days US$8.99; Austria/Bulgaria/Czechia 1GB from US$1.99 (per a summary of NordVPN's official comparison article; the original page could not be opened directly); US number subscription from US$0.99/month, with call/SMS packs bought separately from US$0.99
The number requires an ongoing subscription (about US$0.99/month; media reports vary from $0.84 to $1.99); the number stays the same while the subscription is active; reclaim rules after cancelling: Unverified
An email address/Nord account and payment are enough; whether the number feature needs extra identity checks: Unverified
Data plans themselves have no number. From 2026-06-11 the app offers a US +1 number: the official press release says it supports incoming and outgoing calls, SMS and 2FA verification; reports say unlimited SMS can be received even without a plan, while sending SMS and making calls need a separate call/SMS pack without data, and outgoing calls can only reach local numbers within the plan's coverage area. Media disagree on whether it is a mobile number range or VoIP, and no tests were found on whether exchanges/banks recognise it as a real mobile number; not suitable as your main verification number

Cheap small data packs for short trips; a cheap US number on the side for ordinary sign-up SMS
Coverage: global / multi-country (about 200 destinations). The app includes Nord security features such as ad blocking, threat protection and virtual location (third-party review). Small 1GB plans mostly last 7 days, others mostly 30 days. Refunds: the official help page says uninstalled or unactivated plans can be fully refunded within 30 days; installed and activated plans count as used and a full refund is not guaranteed; a third party says usage under 1% may get a full or partial refund case by case, with support replying within about 5 working days. saily.com and support.saily.com refuse scraping (403), so most of the above comes from search snippets and media reports. Dependable travel data from a carrier-backed provider; small data allowances with long validity
Coverage: global / multi-country (part of Transatel / NTT). The China plan page says ‘data sharing allowed’ (probably hotspot) and shows a 5G badge, but 5G in China is not confirmed; the clock starts on arrival, and more data can be added in the app when it runs out. Whether traffic exits via Hong Kong and whether Google works directly: not stated on the official site, Unverified. Refunds (official help): only if none of the purchased plans has been used; refused once use has started; may be refunded if it cannot be used because the phone is network-locked or incompatible; a third party says requests must be made within 14 working days of purchase (not verified on the official site)

Pay & Fly balance carries over to your next trip; the virtual number is a monthly/annual subscription and is lost when you cancel (details unverified)
Email address and payment; the official site does not mention ID requirements
The data eSIM itself has no number. A virtual number can be bought separately; a third party says it only receives SMS and cannot make calls, and number countries are limited to the Netherlands, the US, Canada and Israel; it is an in-app virtual number, and no tests were seen on bank/exchange acceptance, so the risk is high

Where the data comes from
- Every entry was researched online on 31 October 2026, checked against the carrier’s own site where possible. Many official sites block automated access, so some entries rely partly on third-party reviews and forums. The caveats say so where that applies.
- Fields we could not confirm are marked “not verified”. That does not mean the feature is unsupported.
- There is no public list of which exchanges or banks accept which numbers, and we have not tested this.
- This guide only collects public information. It does not promote any carrier, contains no referral links and offers no way around ID registration.
