In one sentence
Scroll is a ZK Rollup that works like zkSync and Linea: every batch of transactions comes with a zero-knowledge proof for Ethereum to verify.
What sets it apart is the goal of bytecode-level compatibility with Ethereum: the machine code compiled from an Ethereum contract runs on Scroll as it is, with no change of compiler or code. That goes further than zkSync-style “language compatibility”, making migration almost free for developers, at the cost of harder proof generation.
Where it came from
- From 2021: the team began researching zkEVMs, collaborating extensively with the Ethereum Foundation’s privacy and scaling research group, with much of the work open-sourced.
- October 2023: Scroll mainnet launched.
- 2024: the “Scroll Sessions” points campaign drew many users; in October the SCR token was issued and airdropped.
As with the other Layer 2s, gas is paid in ETH and SCR is a governance token. SCR’s market cap is only $4.2M.
- Stage 0
Still on "training wheels": proofs may not be live, or the operator can change the rules alone
- Stage 1
Proofs are live, but a security council can still override or upgrade in an emergency
- Stage 2
Fully governed by code and proofs; nobody can change outcomes unilaterally
What is on-chain today
- USDT 48% $4.2M
- USDC 49% $4.3M
- Other 2% $178K
Sources: CoinGecko (market cap, supply), DefiLlama (TVL, stablecoins, DEX volume, fees, protocols), measurements from public nodes (block time, validators).
$7.9M locked and $686K of 24-hour DEX volume put it in the smallest tier of the Layer 2s on this site. The three ZK Rollups side by side:

Dollar figures from DefiLlama; block times are measured averages over the last 10,000 blocks on public nodes (the last hour of slots for Solana); security stages from L2BEAT.
Strengths and trade-offs
- Bytecode-level compatibility with Ethereum, so contracts and tools need almost no changes.
- Correctness is guaranteed by zero-knowledge proofs, and its technical direction matches Ethereum's research.
- Lots of open-source work and research collaboration; strong technical reputation.
- Very little money or activity on the chain; DEX pools are shallow and prices are easily moved by small amounts.
- L2BEAT rates it Stage 0, and contracts can be upgraded instantly.
- Users drifted away after the airdrop, and SCR's market cap is small.
- 01
Pools are shallow: when a small token spikes, check liquidity and the top ten holders first.
- 02
Confirm whether assets came through the official bridge or are wrapped tokens minted by a third-party bridge.
- 03
Check upgradeability and owner permissions on Scrollscan, as on Ethereum.
Data and sources
- Live figures: CoinGecko (SCR market cap), DefiLlama, L2BEAT and a public Scroll node (measured block time).
- Mechanisms are based on the official Scroll documentation and L2BEAT’s project page.
