In one sentence
Linea is a ZK Rollup that works like zkSync: each batch of transactions comes with a zero-knowledge proof for Ethereum to verify. Its selling point is being as close to identical to Ethereum as possible (a so-called zkEVM), so Ethereum contracts and tools deploy with almost no changes.
Consensys, which builds it, is one of the oldest companies in the Ethereum ecosystem and owns the MetaMask wallet and the Infura node service. So Linea is supported by MetaMask out of the box.
Where it came from
- July 2023: Linea Mainnet Alpha went live and then opened to everyone.
- 2023–2024: points campaigns (Linea Voyage, LXP) attracted large numbers of users farming interactions in hope of an airdrop.
- June 2024: a DEX on the chain was exploited, and the Linea team paused the sequencer to stop the attacker moving the funds. It saved the money, but for many people it was the first clear demonstration that on a Layer 2 with a single sequencer, the operator really can stop the whole chain.
- September 2025: the LINEA token was issued.
The LINEA token design
Fees on Linea are still paid in ETH; LINEA cannot pay gas. The most discussed part of the design is the “dual burn”: after operating costs, part of the on-chain fees is burned as ETH and the rest is used to buy LINEA on the market and burn it. In other words, the more active the chain, the more ETH and LINEA are burned.
The design only works if there are enough transactions on the chain. LINEA’s market cap is $72M, and 24-hour on-chain fees are $2,294.
- Stage 0
Still on "training wheels": proofs may not be live, or the operator can change the rules alone
- Stage 1
Proofs are live, but a security council can still override or upgrade in an emergency
- Stage 2
Fully governed by code and proofs; nobody can change outcomes unilaterally
L2BEAT rates Linea only Stage 0, with three of the five risks marked bad: users cannot force transactions if the sequencer halts, cannot withdraw if the proposer halts, and contracts can be upgraded instantly. The 2024 halt was these powers being used in practice.
What is on-chain today
- USDT 20% $7.2M
- USDC 64% $23.6M
- Other 16% $5.9M
Sources: CoinGecko (market cap, supply), DefiLlama (TVL, stablecoins, DEX volume, fees, protocols), measurements from public nodes (block time, validators).
Like zkSync, Linea’s locked value ($24.1M) is now small. Measured block time is 8.12 s, and blocks slow down when activity is low. The two ZK Rollups side by side:

Dollar figures from DefiLlama; block times are measured averages over the last 10,000 blocks on public nodes (the last hour of slots for Solana); security stages from L2BEAT.
Strengths and trade-offs
- Highly compatible with Ethereum, so moving contracts and tools over is cheap.
- Backed by Consensys and MetaMask, with built-in wallet support.
- Correctness is guaranteed by zero-knowledge proofs.
- L2BEAT Stage 0: sequencing, withdrawals and upgrades all depend heavily on Consensys, and the chain was actually halted in 2024.
- Funds and volume on the chain are now small, so the dual burn does not burn much yet.
- Many early users came to farm points and airdrops, and retention after the airdrop has been poor.
- 01
Liquidity is very thin: when a small token spikes, check pool depth and the top ten holders first.
- 02
Confirm whether assets came through the official bridge or a third-party one; official bridge withdrawals depend on the operator submitting proofs.
- 03
Links saying "you can still claim the Linea airdrop" are mostly phishing; trust only announcements on the official website.
