Jupiter: from price comparison tool to Solana's super-app

It began as an aggregator that found you the best price across exchanges, then added perpetuals, lending, a launchpad and a wallet. JUP is also one of the highest-valued app tokens in the Solana ecosystem.

In one sentence

When you swap on Solana, the same pair may have pools on a dozen exchanges, each at a different price. Jupiter splits your trade and sends the pieces to whichever pools give the best fill. This is called aggregation, or routing.

The “Swap” button in almost every Solana wallet calls Jupiter behind the scenes, which has made it Solana’s largest gateway for traffic.

Timeline

  • 2021: launched as an aggregator. Its founder is active in the community under the pseudonym Meow.
  • 2023: launched perpetuals. Unlike an order book, traders bet directly against a liquidity pool (JLP), whose holders earn fees and take the other side of traders’ profits and losses.
  • January 2024: the first JUP airdrop; the large airdrop held around each January since has been nicknamed “Jupuary”.
  • 2025: launched a lending product, acquired the meme-trading app Moonshot, and kept expanding its launchpad and mobile app, heading towards “one app for all on-chain finance”.

Its place in the Solana system

  • Gateway: wallet and app swaps all go through it, so it sees more trading flow than any single exchange.
  • Price discovery: it decides which pool an order goes to, indirectly shaping each exchange’s share of volume.
  • Ecosystem platform: the launchpad, airdrops and DAO make it more than a tool; it is where projects, traders and token holders gather.

Controversies and risks

  • Pool risk in perpetuals: JLP holders are the traders’ counterparty. When the market moves one way and traders win collectively, the pool loses.
  • Concentration: if most swaps pass through Jupiter, one outage or routing bias has a very wide impact.
  • Token unlocks and governance: JUP’s long-term unlock schedule and DAO voting turnout have been ongoing topics of debate.

What to watch

  1. Monthly aggregator volume: a gauge of overall Solana trading activity.
  2. Perpetuals open interest and the JLP pool’s profit and loss.
  3. JUP’s unlock pace and token policies such as buybacks and burns.
