Early capital: who got SOL, and at what price

Multicoin Capital, a16z, Polychain, Jump and others came in across several funding rounds in 2018–2021. At genesis, private-sale and team allocations together came close to half of supply, the starting point for understanding SOL's long-term selling pressure and who has a say.

Genesis allocation

Solana’s token allocation at genesis (per the published distribution):

SOL genesis allocationShare of genesis supply
  • Community reserveManaged by the foundation38.89%
  • Seed round16.23%
  • Founding round12.92%
  • Team12.79%
  • Foundation10.46%
  • Validator round5.18%
  • Strategic round1.88%
  • CoinList public sale1.64%

The four private rounds (seed, founding, validator, strategic) total about 36%, or about 49% with the team; the public sale was only 1.64%. These allocations were released on their own unlock schedules and are now essentially all unlocked.

Funding rounds

Date Round Size and investors Price (public sources)
2018 Seed Early angels and firms About $0.04
2018 Founding Early firms About $0.20
July 2019 Series A $20M, led by Multicoin Capital —
March 2020 CoinList public sale About $1.76M $0.22
June 2021 Private round $314M, led by a16z and Polychain Discount to the market price at the time

For comparison: SOL’s all-time high is about $293.31 (2025-01-19), and it now trades around $106.36. Seed buyers were up thousands of times at the peak.

Key firms

  • Multicoin Capital: led the Series A and is one of Solana’s most committed and most vocal backers. Its co-founder later became chairman of the SOL treasury company Forward Industries (see SOL treasury companies).
  • a16z and Polychain: led the $314 million private round in 2021, marking the arrival of top-tier institutional money.
  • Jump: both an investor and the developer of Firedancer (see Jump Crypto).
  • FTX / Alameda: once among the biggest backers, and after collapsing the biggest burden (see FTX / Alameda).

Controversies and risks

  • Concentrated allocation: private sales and the team together came close to half, early holders’ costs were tiny, and there is always room for them to take profits.
  • Influence: large firms hold a lot of SOL while also investing in ecosystem projects and running validators, so their public statements and votes carry great weight in where the community goes.

What to watch

  1. SOL moving out of large firms’ and custodians’ addresses, especially into exchanges.
  2. Early investors’ positions in governance votes (such as inflation proposals).
