TON: the chain that lives inside Telegram

A chain first designed by the Telegram team and later taken over by the community. Contracts cooperate by sending messages and the network can shard without limit; its biggest advantage is a direct line to Telegram's billion-scale user base.

In one sentence

TON stands for “The Open Network”. What makes it special is not the technology but the front door: Telegram has a TON wallet, TON mini apps and TON payments built in, so users can use the chain without leaving the chat app.

Technically it differs from every chain so far: it is not EVM-compatible, and contracts cannot call each other directly; they can only send each other “messages”.

Where it came from

  • 2018: Telegram founders the Durov brothers led the design of TON (then the Telegram Open Network) and raised about $1.7 billion privately.
  • 2020: the US Securities and Exchange Commission sued Telegram, ruling the token sale an unregistered securities offering. Telegram returned investors’ money and left the project.
  • Afterwards: community developers took over the open-source code, kept it running, renamed it The Open Network and set up the TON Foundation.
  • 2023–2024: Telegram embraced TON again, building in a wallet and using TON to sell usernames and ads. Tap-to-earn games such as Notcoin and Hamster Kombat brought in hundreds of millions of users. In 2024 Tether issued USDT on TON.
  • August 2024: Pavel Durov was detained in France for questioning, and the TON price fell sharply for a while.

Structure: masterchain, workchains, shards

TON is not one chain but a set of chains:

  • Masterchain: records the network’s configuration, the validator list and the latest state of every other chain.
  • Workchains: where applications actually run; at present mainly a single basic workchain.
  • Shardchains: under heavy load a workchain automatically splits into several shardchains that work in parallel, and merges back when load falls.

Measured, the masterchain produces a block on average every 406 ms, and 382 validators were elected for the current round.

Contracts “send messages”

On Ethereum, one transaction can call several contracts in turn within the same block, and either everything succeeds or everything is rolled back.

TON works differently: each contract only handles messages sent to it, and when it is done it sends a message to the next contract. An operation that looks like one step (such as a swap on a DEX) is really a chain of messages that may span several blocks and shards.

how it worksOne swap on TON
  1. 01Wallet sends a message

Your wallet contract sends a message transferring tokens to the DEX.

    One block
  2. 02Token wallet forwards

Your token wallet contract moves the tokens to the DEX's token wallet with a "please swap this" message attached.

  3. 03Pool calculates

The DEX's pool contract receives the message and works out how much you get.

  4. 04Tokens sent back

The pool messages its own token wallet to send the output tokens to you.

  5. 05Partial failure possible

If any step fails, earlier steps are not rolled back automatically; contracts must include refund logic.

    A few seconds

This design lets the network shard without limit; the cost is harder development, and when something goes wrong funds can get stuck partway.

Toncoin and Jettons

  • Toncoin: pays fees and is staked with validators. About 2.83B are in circulation, a market cap of $3.9B.
  • Jetton: TON’s token standard. Unlike Ethereum, a Jetton is not one contract recording everyone’s balance; instead each holder has their own token wallet contract, managed by a “master contract”.

Things worth noticing:

  • The money is mostly USDT: $719.4M of stablecoins, far more than the $49.6M locked in DeFi. Many people simply use TON to send USDT inside Telegram.
  • Locked value is mostly staking: liquid staking such as Tonstakers accounts for the bulk; the main DEXs are STON.fi and DeDust.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths
  • Plugged directly into Telegram, so user acquisition costs are tiny; well suited to payments and mini apps.
  • Dynamic sharding can, in principle, scale with load.
  • Sending USDT is cheap and convenient.
Trade-offs
  • Contracts cooperate through asynchronous messages, which makes development hard, and funds can get stuck when something fails.
  • Not EVM-compatible; the tooling and developer ecosystem are small.
  • The ecosystem depends heavily on Telegram and its founders, whose news moves the price; DeFi is small.
Investigating a project on TON? Check these first
  1. 01

Has the Jetton master contract's admin been cleared? If not, the admin can keep minting.

  2. 02

There are many fake tokens with the same name: check the Jetton master address and trust only the one the project publishes.

  3. 03

Many "airdrop" and "claim your prize" mini apps and bots in Telegram are phishing; they trick you into connecting your wallet and signing away your assets.

  4. 04

When depositing TON to an exchange, many require a memo; leaving it out can stop the deposit from arriving.

  5. 05

For tap-to-earn projects: the token unlock schedule, the team's share, and whether the token has any real use after launch.
